Titanic Passenger List Online and Free

16 April 2007

Fully digitised images of the RMS Titanic's original 34-page passenger list are now available for the very first time online. Its addition completes the set of passengers lists for the ships leaving the UK during the decade 1910-1919, recently added to the ancestorsonboard.com collection.

These images are available only at findmypast.com, and are presented in association with The National Archives

The original Titanic passenger list records the names, port of departure, occupation, nationality, age, class of travel, destination and country of intended future permanent residence of all who sailed on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912.

Usually it costs up to £3 to view a single passenger list image (subscription access is available), but for a limited time only visitors will be available to view, print, save and download the Titanic passenger list free of charge. genealogy, family history, ancestry

Marking the 95th anniversary of the ship's tragic loss, the online release brings the original documents together for the first time online and in print, as there are no images of the originals published in any media elsewhere.

The 34-page original passenger list consists of two parts: one part is for passengers who boarded at Southampton, England on 10th April 1912, the other part is for passengers who boarded at Queenstown (Cobh of Cork), Ireland on 11th April 1912.

These lists had been housed in separate boxes and kept under lock and key at The National Archives in Kew. Considered to be high-profile by The National Archives, they qualified for the same level of security as Henry VIII's divorce papers and the Domesday Book and could only be consulted under supervision.

The ship's original passenger list reveals who really sailed on the ship, undermining some of the more pervasive myths that surround the Titanic. Discover the lucky few who narrowly escaped the fate of the other passengers when they disembarked from the ship at Cherbourg, France.

The original documents also show that some passengers who intended to board at Queenstown (Cobh in County Cork) did not actually embark, despite having purchased tickets. Did these lucky escapes shape your family tree in any way?

You can also search the currently available decades, 1890-1919, at ancestorsonboard.com. Buy the Voyager subscription or pay-per-view units to see these records. Or the new Explorer subscription gives you access to the passenger lists plus millions of other records for 12 months.
