Pontefract |
Pontefract, is a small market town with a population of around 40,000 and situated in West Yorkshire close to the M62 motorway and the A1. The name Pontefract originates from the Latin name of ponte fractus, which means "broken bridge".
Pontefract is renowned for the number of Public Houses that are concentrated in the small town centre, which also hosts a local market twice a week. Pontefract is also famous for having one of the best flat horse racing courses in the country. This surrounds the local park and lake and is within easy walking distance of the town centre. | |

Pontefract Castle
Pontefract has the remains of what once was a great and historic castle built in Norman times around 1070 and where King Richard II died -possibly murdered in 1400. |

Pontefract heritage
Pontefract's history is long and eventful with several buildings from its historic past still surviving today. All Saint's Church, now run by English Heritage is built around and inside the ruins of the original church, severely damaged durng the English Civil War.
An old building still standing in the town centre and now a Public House "The Counting House" dates back to the 16th century.
The town square has the Buttercross, which was built in 1734 and close by is St Giles Church, now the Parish Church of Pontefract. Read more about St Giles Church in this 1963 Pontefract Parish Church guide, which has been scanned and transcribed by Family Tree Folk.
The famous liquorice connection |

Liquorice and the "Pontefract Cake" has been a long tradition for the town. Around the mid 18th century there were nearly 50 growers cultivating the liquorice plant on an estimated 50 - 100 acres.
Although liquorice is no longer grown commercially in Pontefract, the town is still home to two major sweet producers Haribo and Wilkinsons, who continue to make liquorice "cakes" and liquorice all-sorts in the home of the "Pomfret Cake". |

We have also developed some humorous designs relating to Pontefract and it's liquorice-loving inhabitants who hold an annual Liquorice Festival every July! |

The Liquorice Plant
Liquorice comes from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabraand and the name originates from the ancient Greek word for "sweet root".
The plant grows to a height of between 1 - 2 metres and has flowers of pale blue. However it is the extensive root system that produces the liquorice and this is lifted after approx. 5 years.
Here we have a colourful image of the plant in our keyring, paperweight and magnet designs. |
