Census searches, copies and transcriptions
(1841 – 1901)
Finding your family in the census can provide lots of useful information about your family history and UK ancestry. The censuses in England and Wales were taken every 10 years and are available to family historians for the period between 1841 and 1901. The 1911 census is expected online sometime during late 2008.
A census return can reveal a great deal about family relationships, occupations, places of origin and related family lines.
Now that there are online searcheable databases of the transcribed censuses available on Ancestry.com (Ancestry.co.uk, or other regional sites), and other sites such as findmypast.com, finding your ancestors should be relatively easy. The trouble is that the search engines available at Ancestry are not without their problems, and knowing the secrets of searching effectively can take a lot of eyestrain.
Because we use Ancestry and other databases every day, we can sometimes find your ancestors, even though you have looked and found no trace of them. If we can't find anything within an hour, we stop and let you know, so we make sure our services is cost effective.
