York Family History Fair 2008
In 2008, York Family History Fair, known more commonly as the Yorkshire Family History Fair is being held on Saturday 28th June, at the Knavesmire Exhibition Centre at York Racecourse. The doors open at 10am and close at 4.30pm. There is ample free car parking and admission costs £4 per person.
What is York Family History Fair?
Simply one of the biggest and best family history fairs held in the UK each year. York Family History Fair is now in its 13th year, and is going strong.
This is a full day out for any family historian or genealogist, whether just starting out, or with years of experience. The stands and exhibitors are very busy as hundreds of people attend - if you want information from a popular stand, you might have to wait or come back later in the day. But the wait is worth it as the fair is so packed with information all in one place - but just for a few hours.
Who will I see at York Family History Fair?
The number of exhibitors varies each year, but there are usually many of the family history societies, particularly those from Yorkshire or the north of England, although societies travel down from Scotland and up from Cornwall and Devon. The Yorkshire Family History Fair website has listed some of the exhibitors - and a couple of photographs from last year - but although this is continually updated before the event, the final list is only available in the information leaflet available on the day.
Exhibitors also include companies such as My History and Family Tree Folk, Jigrah, the family tree printers, and map, book and postcard dealers.
The stands are well spaced and arranged over the four or so floors of the Knavesmire Exhibition Centre that is at York Racecourse. On a lovely June day, looking out of the window of the family history fair and over the brilliant green of the racecourse is quite a view.
What facilities are available?
The different floors are accessible by staircases, but there is also a lift to give full disabled access. Toilets are on every floor and there is also a large refreshment area selling food - snacks and sandwiches etc, and hot and cold drinks. As you would expect at a venue and event like this, these are not the cheapest ever, but you are welcome to bring your own sandwiches and eat them outside. Just don't plan on going home for lunch, because you won't get round the whole fair in just an hour or two! |
