One of the largest and most successful of Scotland's Family History Societies is the Aberdeen & North-East Scotland Family History Society, based in King Street, Aberdeen. Since its foundation in 1978, ANESFHS has recruited over 18,000 members, many of them abroad.
Annual membership is only £15.
In a relaxed, friendly environment, researchers can view source documents not available on the Internet, browse through over 5,500 books and maps in the library and, of course, have a chat with the Centre’s knowledgeable staff and other members.
Microfiche and microfilm readers and networked computers are used to view births, baptisms and marriages in the pre-1855 Old Parish Registers (OPRs), the supplementary International Genealogical Indexes (IGIs), and the censuses for 1841-1901 for the whole of Scotland.
There is also a team of experienced researchers who deal with thousands of queries from members all over the world. ANESFHS has its own ever-expanding Website at www.anesfhs.org.uk. Many members join via e-mail, and the Society’s online publications catalogue (containing over 2,500 titles) is a major success. Every year, the Society processes several hundred orders for books, maps and fiche to addresses worldwide.
